Signs Your Suspension Needs Repair

Suspension issues rarely appear overnight. They creep in over months, and by the time they're obvious, you've usually also worn out tyres, wheel bearings or steering components. Here are the early symptoms to watch for.

1. Bouncing after a bump

A good shock absorber dampens the bump in one to two motions. If your car bounces three or four times after hitting a pothole, your shocks or struts have lost damping — and they're also making your tyres lose contact with the road every few metres.

2. Pulling to one side

If you let go of the steering wheel on a flat road and the car drifts, it could be alignment — but it could also be a collapsed bushing, a failing ball joint, or uneven tyre pressure. Don't just align it and hope; find the cause.

3. Uneven tyre wear

Wear on the inner or outer edge of a tyre usually means alignment or a worn suspension component. Feathering or scalloped wear points to worn shocks. Your tyres are the cheapest diagnostic tool in your car — read them.

4. Clunks and knocks over bumps

A clunk when going over speed bumps is almost always a worn bushing, sway bar link or ball joint. It won't leave you stranded, but it's a sign your front-end geometry is no longer where the manufacturer put it.

5. Nose dive under braking

If the front of the car pitches forward aggressively when you brake hard, your front struts are tired. That also increases stopping distance — a safety issue, not just a comfort one.

6. Steering wheel vibration

Vibration at 80–100 km/h is often wheel balancing. But if it persists after balancing, look at tie rods, ball joints and wheel bearings.

What a proper suspension inspection looks like

  • Visual inspection of shocks/struts for oil leaks.
  • Bounce test at each corner.
  • Hands-on check of every bushing, ball joint and tie rod for play.
  • Sway bar and link condition.
  • Tyre wear pattern analysis.
  • Test drive over known surfaces.

If any of the six symptoms above sound familiar, book a suspension check with us before you replace tyres — otherwise you're just starting the wear cycle over.
