What to Do When Your Check Engine Light Comes On

What to Do When Your Check Engine Light Comes On

That little amber engine icon on your dashboard is one of the most misunderstood warning lights in modern cars. It's not automatically a disaster — but it's not something to ignore either. The way your car behaves when it comes on tells you almost everything you need to know about how urgent the situation is.

Steady light vs flashing light

A steady check engine light generally means the car has detected a fault that is not immediately damaging, but still needs investigation. Your engine is protecting itself by running in a safer mode, and the computer has stored a fault code that a diagnostic scanner can read.

A flashing check engine light is different. It usually indicates a severe misfire or a condition that can damage your catalytic converter — one of the most expensive components on the car. If it flashes, reduce load, avoid high revs and get off the road as soon as it's safe.

What you should do in the first 10 minutes

  • Don't panic — in most cases the car is safe to drive short distances.
  • Check for obvious issues: a loose fuel cap is one of the most common triggers.
  • Listen for unusual noises, watch for rough idle, loss of power or misfiring.
  • Check the temperature gauge and oil pressure. If either is abnormal, pull over.
  • Note the driving conditions — freeway, traffic, after fueling — when the light came on.

Why 'just reset it' is a bad idea

Many generic scanners offer a 'clear codes' button that makes the light go away for a few minutes. The fault has not been fixed — the computer will simply log the same code again the next time the condition occurs. Worse, some codes need multiple drive cycles to re-appear, which means the light may stay off just long enough for you to miss a service deadline.

Diagnosing a warning light is not about clearing the code. It's about understanding why the code was stored in the first place.

How we approach a check engine light at Kenya Car Guy

Our diagnostic process follows a fixed sequence. First we pull the full fault history — not just the active code, but pending and permanent codes too. Then we read live data from the affected systems: fuel trims, oxygen sensor readings, timing, temperature, misfire counters and more. Only after we've cross-checked that data do we remove parts, test components or recommend repairs.

That method is what stops the costly cycle of 'replace the part, clear the code, see if it comes back.' You get a real diagnosis, a clear estimate, and a permanent fix.

When to book diagnostics

  • The light is flashing — book today.
  • The light is steady but paired with rough idle, loss of power or unusual smell — book within 24 hours.
  • The light is steady and the car drives normally — book within a week.
  • The light is intermittent — still worth scanning; pending codes may already be stored.
